Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, is expected to receive the lawmaker representing Kano Central senatorial district, Ibrahim Shekarau, back to the PDP today.
The former governor of Kano State had dumped the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the buildup to the 2019 elections.
Shekarau was chosen to serve in the Senate on the APC platform; however, after a falling out with the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, he defected to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
Shekarau, who won a return seat on the NNPP platform, was a member of the party for a short period of time before his friendship with Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party’s presidential candidate, soured.
In response to Shekarau’s intention to join the party, Kano State PDP Chairman Shehu Wada Sagagi stated that preparations have been made for Atiku to accept him.
Alhamdulillah, we now have a leader in Kano, and I am thrilled, Sagagi stated in a statement to Daily Trust. Shekarau accepted and has been welcomed back to our beloved party, the PDP, as the highest political office holder permitted by the constitution.
“Everything is in motion to welcome Atiku Abubakar, who is expected in Kano on Sunday, hopefully to see Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau. We agreed to follow him, and with God’s help, we will be successful.”
