Renowned Nigerian author and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has announced a $1,000 reward for anyone who can expose the author of fake news attributed to him in the last six months.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV News morning show on Wednesday, Soyinka expressed his concern over the proliferation of fake news in the country, warning Nigerians to be wary of unfounded information published as fake news, which could cause violence and undermine the country’s democracy.
Soyinka, who lamented the frequency at which false information is linked to him, expressed disgust at the verbiage, garbage, and nauseating news that have been resurrected and attributed to him in the last six months, despite his repeated repudiation of such claims.
The literary icon noted that while some people are quick to dismiss the claims as fake news, others continue to believe them, which is a cause for concern.
To address the problem, Soyinka announced the reward for anyone who can successfully identify the authors of the fake news linked to him in the last six months.
The literary icon, who admitted that he is not a wealthy man, stated that he would raise additional funds to compensate anyone who can help relieve him of the false attribution of fake news.
Soyinka’s announcement has been met with widespread acclaim, with many people praising him for taking a bold step to address the menace of fake news in the country.
Some Nigerians have also called on other public figures to emulate Soyinka’s example by offering rewards for the exposure of fake news linked to them.
