Tottenham Hotspur suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season, falling 2-1 to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

Spurs started the match nervously.

An early injury to an assistant referee seemed to disrupt the game, allowing Spurs to settle and apply pressure on Newcastle.

Despite Spurs’ strong pressing, a defensive lapse in the 34th minute allowed Newcastle to take the lead.

A quick throw-in found Lloyd Kelly on the left wing, who crossed through the legs of James Maddison to set up Harvey Barnes.

Barnes struck the ball first-time into the far post, putting the hosts ahead.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Spurs introduced Brennan Johnson for Pape Sarr, who had been booked.

The substitution brought renewed energy to Tottenham’s attack, and they nearly equalized when Johnson’s deflected cross found Wilson Odobert, but his awkward volley went just wide.

Spurs eventually equalized through an own goal by Dan Burn. A shot from Johnson was saved by Newcastle’s keeper Nick Pope, but the deflection off Burn found the back of the net.

However, the Magpies regained the lead in the 78th minute.

Joelinton broke past Maddison and threaded a pass through to Jacob Murphy, who outpaced Destiny Udogie.

Murphy then squared the ball across the box, allowing Alexander Isak to tap in the match-winner.

Despite Spurs’ efforts, they couldn’t find a second equalizer, and Newcastle secured the 2-1 victory, handing Tottenham their first loss of the season.
