TikTok, the popular app known for its short-form videos, has now expanded into the world of text-based posts.
With this new feature, TikTok aims to provide a dedicated space for written creativity, allowing users to express themselves through text in addition to comments, captions, and videos.
The text posts on TikTok resemble Instagram’s Stories, with selectable background colors, music, and stories to make the posts stand out visually.
These text posts have a character limit of 1,000, which is longer than those on Twitter or Threads.
TikTok also supports the ability for users to remix and interact with text posts through stitching and duetting.
While TikTok is entering the realm of short-form text format popularized by Twitter, it’s worth noting that TikTok’s success can be attributed to its unique video-focused platform, and it remains to be seen if text posts will have the same level of viral impact as videos on the app.
TikTok joins a growing list of companies competing to be the default Twitter alternative, but no clear successor has emerged yet.
Interestingly, TikTok’s parent company, Bytedance, gained popularity in the Western market partly due to its acquisition of Vine’s former management, which was a pioneer in short-form video creativity.
