President Bola Tinubu has decided to suspend his proposal to provide a cash transfer of N8,000 to 12 million poor households for six months as a government palliative measure.
This decision comes after facing opposition from many Nigerians who believe that the funds are too little to make a significant impact and that ensuring accountability in reaching the poorest households is not guaranteed.
Tinubu’s spokesman, Dele Alake, stated that the proposal will be “reviewed” in response to the rejection by Nigerians.
Tinubu has ordered that the entire palliative package of the government be unveiled to the public.
The statement also assures Nigerians that the N500 billion approved by parliament to alleviate the impact of the subsidy removal will be used judiciously and that the relief beneficiaries will be Nigerians regardless of their ethnic, religious, or political affiliation.
Tinubu is committed to prioritizing the well-being of Nigerians and has demonstrated this through previous decisions, such as addressing burdensome taxes for the business community.
He will continue to listen to the views of the citizens and believes that the government exists to serve the interests of the people.
