Manchester United could face the possibility of their manager being banned in European fixtures if they appoint Thomas Tuchel in the summer.

Tuchel, the current Bayern Munich and former Chelsea boss, is the favorite to take over from Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Speculation about Ten Hag’s future at the club has grown following United’s disappointing 4-0 away loss against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

While United are operating under the assumption that Ten Hag will remain in charge next season, there are doubts, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly “not completely sold” on the Dutchman.

Tuchel recently led Bayern in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

Despite a late 2-1 defeat, Tuchel’s post-match reaction to a controversial moment in the game could land him in hot water with UEFA.

After a disallowed goal due to offside, Tuchel expressed his frustration in the post-match press conference, accusing the officials of bias.

UEFA may potentially charge Tuchel for his comments, and a decision is expected by the start of next week.

If appointed as the United manager and the club qualifies for Europe, Tuchel could potentially face a touchline ban from a UEFA game at the start of next season.

However, United’s current position in the Premier League table, sitting in eighth place, would see them miss out on European competition.

Nevertheless, a seventh-place finish or above, or a win in the FA Cup final against Manchester City next month, could secure United’s spot in European competition for the 2024/25 season.
