West Ham United academy goalkeeper, Oscar Fairs has tragically passed away at 15 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Oscar was diagnosed in August 2023 with a rare 7cm ependymoma, a type of brain tumor.
Prior to his diagnosis, he experienced symptoms such as heart palpitations, headaches, and right-sided weakness, but was initially misdiagnosed with mental health issues and migraines.
Oscar underwent seven surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, but doctors later confirmed that only palliative care was available.
A GoFundMe campaign was set up to raise £100,000 for a treatment trial in France, with contributions from West Ham players, co-owner David Sullivan, and Arsenal’s Declan Rice.
On Friday, West Ham announced the tragic news of Oscar’s passing, leading to the postponement of all academy matches this weekend in his memory.
Mark Noble, the club’s sporting director, expressed profound sadness, remembering Oscar as a talented goalkeeper and a wonderful person.
‘Oscar was adored by everyone at the academy and will be deeply missed,’ he stated.
The club extended heartfelt condolences to Oscar’s parents, Natalie and Russell, and his brother Harry, while asking for privacy during this difficult time.
