The Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawan, has formed a committee to investigate the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for spending N1.4 trillion without appropriation.
There are speculations that this move is an attempt to derail Godwill Akpabio’s ambition to become the Senate President for the 10th National Assembly.
The APC’s decision to nominate Akpabio has not been well-received by many of his colleagues.
During consideration of a report by the Committee on Niger Delta on NDDC’s 2021, 2022, and 2023 budgets, Senator Adamu Aliero moved a motion to probe the activities of the NDDC.
President Muhammadu Buhari had asked the Senate to approve NDDC’s budgets for 2021, 2022, and 2023 after the agency had already spent the funds for the 2021 and 2022 financial years.
The committee on Niger Delta submitted its report on Tuesday and urged the Senate to approve the budget estimates, but concerns were raised about the budget being a breach of the constitution.
The Senate President formed an ad hoc committee to investigate the agency’s financial activities on the 2021 and 2022 budget estimates, and the committee is to submit its report to the plenary in one week.
The Senate also stood down consideration of the 2023 budget estimates of the NDDC, while asking for further information and clarification on the figures contained in the proposal.
