An 84-year-old white man from Kansas City has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action after shooting a Black teenager who mistakenly approached his house.
The incident occurred when Ralph Yarl, 16, went to pick up his younger twin brothers from the wrong house.
Andrew Lester fired two shots through a glass door, hitting Yarl in the head and arm.
While the encounter did not involve any exchange of words, Yarl reported that the man told him, “Don’t come around here.”
The prosecutor stated that there was a racial component to the case, but did not provide further details.
The shooter could face life in prison if found guilty of the assault charge and up to 15 years for criminal action.
Hate crime charges were not filed, as they carry lesser penalties in Missouri.
The incident has sparked protests, with demonstrators calling for justice and an end to violence against Black lives.
Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden have both spoken out against the shooting.
Missouri has a “stand-your-ground law,” but the shooter can only use deadly force if they reasonably believe it is necessary to protect themselves or another person against death or serious physical injury.
