Funke Akindele has announced her plans to return to politics. The popular actress and filmmaker previously ran for deputy governorship in Lagos State in 2023 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), alongside Olajide ‘Jandor’ Adediran.
According to Iwok Iniobong from May 4, 2025, although Akindele’s political debut was not successful, she has expressed no regrets about her involvement. She shared her thoughts during the #WithChude Live event in Lagos, explaining that her main motivation for entering politics was to make a positive impact on society.
Akindele reflected on how intimidating the political arena was at first but credited female leaders like Abike Dabiri, the chair of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, for helping her gain confidence. “What would be would be. Fear will only put you in a place,” she said, underscoring her personal growth throughout the experience.
The actress also emphasized how much she learned about governance, including the importance of data and statistics. She noted that her time in politics had not only made her bolder but also more knowledgeable about her country and state.
Despite the challenges she faced, Akindele remains committed to contributing to society through politics. She remains optimistic about her future political endeavors and is open to running again if the opportunity arises.
