Plateau State House of Assembly’s newly reinstated Speaker, Rt. Hon. Nuhu Abok, has resumed his office following the judgement of the State High Court on Monday.
Abok arrived at the Assembly complex a few minutes before 10am on Tuesday morning and went straight to his office.
Some lawmakers were seen with Abok in his office, and there were indications that the House may sit in plenary.
The Clerk of the State House of Assembly and the State’s Commissioner of Police have been served with the court’s order reinstating Abok as Speaker.
Chuwang Paul, Counsel to Gwottson Fom, member representing Jos South State constituency, and Tyem Pirfa Jinfa, member representing Langtang North Constituency, confirmed that the Clerk and CP received the court’s order on Monday.
Justice Musa of the State High Court had reinstated Abok as the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly while granting an injunction restraining the former Speaker, Yakubu Sanda, from parading himself as the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly.
Abok expressed his gratitude to the security agencies and the general public for their support while speaking to newsmen shortly after taking over his office.
He called on the former Speaker, Hon. Sanda, representing Pengana State constituency, to join him and other members of the House to commence sitting for the day.
The Plateau State House of Assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis, which has affected the smooth running of the House.
The crisis started when some lawmakers impeached the then Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abok Ayuba, on August 18, 2020, and elected Yakubu Sanda as the new Speaker.
The situation degenerated into a legal battle, with some lawmakers filing a suit to challenge the impeachment and the election of the new Speaker.
The suit was eventually ruled in favour of Abok Ayuba, who was reinstated as the Speaker of the House.
The reinstatement of Abok Ayuba is expected to bring an end to the leadership crisis in the Plateau State House of Assembly and allow for the smooth running of the House.
It is also expected to enhance the lawmakers’ ability to pass laws and carry out their constitutional duties in the interest of the people of Plateau State.
