The Centre For Civil Rights and Social Justice (CCRSJ), a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has raised an alarm over an alleged pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu by the incumbent Governor of Adamawa State and other top party officials to compromise on the outcome of the state’s governorship re-run.
In a statement signed by the executive director, Peter Ebam, the group called on the INEC Chair to resist any temptation to compromise on the election’s outcome to protect his image.
The CSO accused the incumbent governor of pressuring INEC to cancel the list of ad-hoc staff trained by the commission and replace them with his cronies to manipulate the election’s outcome.
The statement read in part: “Credible information available to us suggests that Gov Fintiri is mounting pressure on INEC chair who sits in Abuja to cancel nominations of adhoc staff done by REC. We know that it is the duty of REC to appoint and train such adhoc staff and he has done so. But pressure is being mounted on the INEC chair to interfere. Prof Yakubu Mahmood should realize that he cannot be chair and Resident Electoral Commissioner for a state at the same time and not yield to this plot.”
The CSO also accused Governor Fintiri of buying over the returning officer in the state, the Vice Chancellor of Modibo University Yola, who is reportedly eager to take over as governor from Fintiri if the plot succeeds after his second tenure.
