The Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Ray Power 106.5 FM in Port Harcourt have been forcibly shut down by individuals allegedly connected to the Rivers State government.

The incident occurred as part of an ongoing land dispute between the state government and Daar Communications, the parent company of AIT and Ray Power FM.

Armed mobile policemen accompanied the individuals who disconnected the transmitting mast and server of the stations.

The management of DAAR Communications has assured its audience that they can still access AIT and Ray Power’s programs through alternative platforms such as DStv, Gotv, StarTimes, and the AIT and Ray Power online apps.

The matter is currently being deliberated in court, and the closure of the stations has been condemned by ActionAid Nigeria as a violation of media freedom and legal processes.

The organization has called on the state government to respect the rule of law and refrain from further actions until all legal options are explored.
