After retiring from international football in May 2022, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has announced his return to the Gabon national team.
The Chelsea player, who is Gabon’s all-time leading scorer, cited a meeting with the country’s president as his motivation for the decision.
“(I) listened to the wise words he said to me as a father talking to his son,” Aubameyang posted on Instagram on Wednesday, May 17.
“A few days ago, I had the immense honour to be received by the President of the Republic (of Gabon) Ali Bongo Ondimba,” he added.
“Following this, I, therefore put myself at the disposal of my country and of the coach Patrice Neveu.”
Gabon is currently leading their Africa Cup of Nations qualification group and has a good chance of qualifying for the tournament.
Aubameyang has struggled in recent club campaigns, losing his leadership at Arsenal before joining Barcelona and then Chelsea.
Despite only playing eight minutes for Barcelona, he will receive a La Liga winners medal.
His best performance for Chelsea so far was scoring twice against AC Milan in the Champions League group stage.
