Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has made a passionate appeal to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to grant freedom to the detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the House Committee on South-East Development Commission (SEDC) at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, Kalu emphasized that a political resolution, rather than a legal battle, would be the best approach to addressing Kanu’s case.
A statement issued by Kalu’s Special Assistant on Print Affairs, Udora Orizu, praised Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to fostering peace, stability, and development in the South-East region. He acknowledged the President’s swift approval of the SEDC Bill, which had repeatedly failed to gain traction in previous Assemblies.
“If Kanu is released, those using his name as an excuse to commit crimes in the region will lose their justification,” Kalu stated. “This will allow security agencies to crack down on the real perpetrators and restore peace.”
South-East Development and Security at the Forefront
Highlighting the severe insecurity plaguing the region, Kalu lamented the struggles of fostering development amidst chaos. He called on the government to champion policies that promote technological innovation, infrastructure, and energy solutions in the South-East.
“President Tinubu has demonstrated his dedication to the South-East,” Kalu said. “While past governments failed to act, he signed the SEDC Bill into law, proving that the region remains an integral part of Nigeria.”
The Deputy Speaker further urged the government to harness the ingenuity of South-East youths, channeling their talents into national development efforts.
