Ike Ekweremadu and Wife's Sentencing Nigerian Senate Appeals for Clemency

The Nigerian Senate has made an appeal to the Centre for Criminal Court in the United Kingdom for clemency in the sentencing of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice.

The couple, along with Dr. Obinna Obeta, were convicted last year of conspiring to exploit a street trader of his kidney under modern slavery laws.

The Senate, citing Ekweremadu’s contributions to democracy in Nigeria and West Africa, as well as the fact that they are first-time offenders, has requested mercy and leniency in their sentencing.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has also written a letter to the British Judicial Authorities seeking clemency.

The House of Representatives, ECOWAS Parliament, and the chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission have also pleaded for leniency in Ekweremadu’s sentencing.
