The BBC has confirmed the passing of legendary football commentator John Motson.
At 77 years old, Motson had a career in broadcasting that spanned over half a century.
He broadcasted for ten World Cup games, ten European championships, two Olympic Games and 29 FA Cup finals.
In 2001 he was awarded an OBE for his services to broadcasting, and up until his passing, he solely commentated on the Premier League’s 2017-2018 season.
Aside from still being remembered for his commentary on Ronnie Redford’s 1972 FA Cup match against Newcastle United, fellow commentators looked up to him for his thorough preparation and attention to detail that made every commentary captivating.
Upon news of Motson’s passing, Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler gave fond memories of their professional rivalry saying “We were friends but rivals in a way as well, I suppose.
“Yet I was full of admiration for him” mourning with “ we have lost somebody who has been at the real top of a profession that I’ve strived to be part of.”
His family released a statement: It is with great sadness we announce that John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep today (Thursday).
The BBC director-general Tim Davie extended condolences saying “John Motson was the voice of a footballing generation – steering us through the twists and turns …of Saturday nights on Match of the Day”.
