A youth-led political advocacy group, Progressive Youth’s For Makinde’s Presidency 2027, has fired back at former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose over his recent comments dismissing Seyi Makinde’s chances in the 2027 presidential race. Fayose, during an interview on Channels Television, had claimed Governor Makinde denied having any presidential ambitions, attributing campaign flyers seen online to “some overzealous boys.”
According to Leadership News, the group labeled Fayose’s remarks as “childish” and stressed that the movement behind Makinde’s potential candidacy is grounded in serious concern for Nigeria’s current trajectory. They argue that the worsening economic conditions, rising insecurity, and systemic collapse of public services since 2015 are reasons Nigerians are seeking credible alternatives.
Prince Christopher Odianarewo, national convener of the group, noted that their call is a response to a national emergency, not a campaign stunt. He said their support is based on Governor Makinde’s proven leadership style, particularly his management of critical sectors in Oyo State.
They pointed to improvements in healthcare, education, infrastructure, agriculture, economic management, and interfaith harmony under Makinde’s administration. His ability to maintain stability while driving developmental reforms, they argued, qualifies him to steer the country in a better direction.
“Our beloved country is decaying. Therefore, we have taken the initiative to identify individuals we believe can lead Nigeria out of this crisis,” Odianarewo said.
Rejecting Fayose’s claim as baseless, the group urged Nigerians to see through what they called political distractions. They emphasized that their mission goes beyond party lines or regional loyalties, describing the campaign for Makinde as one born out of national urgency.
They ended by reiterating their belief in Makinde’s capacity, encouraging citizens to rally behind a leader who has shown competence at the state level, as they believe such governance is needed to rescue Nigeria from deepening hardship.
