Manchester United’s attempt to sign Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez on a temporary deal has hit a brick wall, NaijNaira can report. The Red Devils made a weekend move for the Argentine goalkeeper, proposing a loan agreement, but Villa swiftly rejected the offer.
According to the Daily Mail, United’s interest followed concerns over Andre Onana’s fitness ahead of the new Premier League season. The Cameroonian goalkeeper is nursing a hamstring injury and is at risk of missing the opener against Arsenal on August 17.
Martinez, who played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup win, had stirred speculation about his future after appearing emotional during Villa’s final home match last season. Despite turning down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, Villa remain firm on their £40 million valuation.
In his final appearance of the campaign, Martinez was sent off at Old Trafford as United claimed a 2-0 win — a result that pushed Villa into the Europa League instead of the Champions League.
Asked recently about the keeper’s situation, Villa boss Unai Emery said, “He has a contract with us. We are very happy and we will see how the summer goes.”
Meanwhile, United’s name has also been linked with Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens, who is reportedly valued at £17 million by the Belgian side.
