A tragic incident occurred in Okpanam, Delta State, where stray bullets from NDLEA operatives resulted in the death of a two-year-old child and the injury of their sibling.
The incident took place during a raid on a notorious drug joint in the area.
The children, Ivan Omhonria and Eromonsele, had just returned from school to their mother’s shop when they were hit by the stray bullets.
Ivan was hit in the abdomen, while Eromonsele was grazed on the eye.
They were immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba, but unfortunately, Ivan did not survive.
The State Commandant of the NDLEA, Mr. John Tunde, confirmed the incident and stated that his men did not intentionally open fire on the children.
He explained that during the raid, a Toyota Camry parked nearby tried to escape and ran over one of the operatives.
In an attempt to stop the car, shots were fired, but it is unclear if the children were inside the car at the time.
The injured operative is currently receiving treatment at the Central Hospital in Ogwashi-Uku.
The NDLEA commandant expressed his condolences and visited the hospital with the father of the deceased child.
