Reports have emerged that several Nigerian students, who fled the violence in Sudan, are currently stranded in the desert.
The Nigerian government had announced the release of N150 million to hire 40 buses for the transportation of its citizens from Sudan to Cairo, Egypt, before airlifting them back to Nigeria.
However, some of the evacuated students shared their unpleasant experiences, stating that the drivers had refused to continue the journey due to insufficient funds.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Force (RSF) has led to the displacement of millions and resulted in approximately 500 deaths and thousands of injuries.
Countries have been evacuating their citizens since the ceasefire was declared by the warring factions.
The evacuation of approximately 5,500 Nigerians stranded in Khartoum and other Sudanese cities has commenced, but some Nigerian students remain stranded in the desert.
Meanwhile the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa has said the buses conveying Nigerians from conflict-ridden Sudan have continued their journey.
“I have just spoken to @nemanigeriadg. He confirmed the buses have continued their Journey and said whatever issues have been resolved,” Dabiri-Erewa wrote.
