Actress Anne Njemanze has lost the trademark brand ownership of the movie “Domitilla” in a ruling by the Federal Trademark Registry.
The registry revoked all documents issued to Njemanze in respect of brand ownership of the movie after a long battle with veteran filmmaker Zeb Ejiro over the rightful ownership of the brand name.
The movie, which portrays the life of a young woman struggling to make ends meet as a Lagos prostitute, starred Njemanze as the lead character and other actresses like Sandra Achums, the late Ada Ameh, and Kate Henshaw.
Njemanze reportedly trademarked the name “Domitilla and Device” in 2020 and later approached the trademark registry to register the name.
However, the Registrar of the Trademark department revoked all documents issued to Njemanze, stating that the petitioner (Ejiro) had been using “Domitilla” for a long time, and the respondent (Njemanze) had acted in the film named “Domitilla” for the petitioner.
The tribunal canceled any document that might have been issued to Njemanze, stating that the applicant acted in bad faith, and the petitioner’s claim was upheld.
