The release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has hit fresh stumbling blocks as the Supreme Court has granted leave to the federal government to file nine new grounds of appeal against his release.

The government’s counsel applied for leave to include the new grounds in an amended notice of appeal, which was granted by a five-member panel of the court.

Kanu’s lead counsel informed the panel of applications for his client’s bail based on deteriorating health, but the prosecution objected, stating that the DSS facility where Kanu is being held is well-equipped to cater to his health conditions.

The Supreme Court panel advised Kanu’s counsel to withdraw the applications to allow for a speedy hearing of the main suit.

Kanu was extradited from Kenya by the Nigerian government in June 2021 to face terrorism charges in Abuja, and while the federal high court judge struck out eight of the 15 counts against him, the appellate court later ordered his release, which the federal government is appealing.
