Peter Obi has condemned the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission over its plan to double the salaries of political office holders – www.naijnaira.com reports.
In a strongly worded post on X, reported by BBC, the former Labour Party presidential candidate called the proposal a “shameless grab for more at the expense of Nigeria’s struggling majority.”
He said any pay rise for politicians was “totally unjustifiable” and revealed “the greed and insensitivity” of those in leadership.
According to Obi, leaders should not enrich themselves while millions of Nigerians face worsening living conditions.
“The RMAFC’s reckless haste in prioritising the greed of politicians over the desperate needs of the masses is not only provocative but scandalous,” he said.
Obi insisted political office is meant to be service to the country and not a gateway to personal wealth.
He expressed frustration that security personnel and civil servants remain underpaid while politicians seek massive salary increases.
Obi urged government institutions to channel resources into improving the welfare of public workers rather than rewarding politicians.
He also appealed to RMAFC to “prioritise the welfare of Nigerians, particularly those in the public service, who have been neglected for far too long.”
