Suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele has been granted bail in his corruption trial by a Federal High Court in Lagos.
The bail was set at N20 million and requires one surety in the same amount. Emefiele will be held at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until his bail is perfected.
The trial is scheduled for November 14.
Emefiele was charged with illegal possession of a single-barrel shotgun and live ammunition, to which he pleaded not guilty.
His lawyers argued for his release on self-recognition, stating that all necessary conditions had been fulfilled.
The government’s lawyer opposed the bail application, claiming that Emefiele’s refusal to hand in his passport indicated a capacity to evade trial and intimidate witnesses.
However, the judge ruled that the government’s claim was not supported by the evidence.
Emefiele was appointed governor of the CBN in 2014 and was suspended by President Bola Tinubu on June 9, 2023, before being arrested by the DSS.
