Tinubu Approves Creation of Federal Universities in Osun and Ekiti

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday in Abuja, signed into law two pivotal bills establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.

This announcement came through a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. Titled “President Tinubu Signs Bills Establishing New Federal Universities for Osun, Ekiti States”, the statement emphasized the transformative impact these institutions aim to have on education, research, and economic growth.

“These specialized universities will not only cater to the academic needs of Nigerians but will also serve as catalysts for research, innovation, and economic development,” the statement noted.

The President underscored that the new institutions would nurture experts in agriculture, science, and technology—fields essential to boosting Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) currently recognizes:

  • 63 Federal Universities
  • 63 State Universities
  • 149 Private Universities

Earlier this month, on February 3, 2025, President Tinubu also authorized the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni Town, Tai, Rivers State. Additionally, the government assumed control of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, transitioning it into a federal institution.
