In a strategic move to calm internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Special Reconciliation Committee led by former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki visited Enugu on Friday for a closed-door meeting with Governor Peter Mbah.
According to a report, Saraki was joined by former Bayelsa State Governor Senator Seriake Dickson and former Gombe State Governor Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo. The meeting at the Government House in Enugu focused on resolving grievances stemming from recent decisions about the party’s national leadership.
Tensions had flared in the South East PDP after a communique was issued following the zonal executive council meeting. The statement confirmed the renomination of former PDP National Youth Leader, Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye, to complete the remaining tenure of the National Secretary. It also warned of a potential mass defection if the party failed to act swiftly on the resolution.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Saraki stressed the importance of unity ahead of the PDP’s upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and potential national convention.
“This is the first state we are coming to because we appreciate the importance of the South East in our PDP family… We are here to consult with him and first to commend him on the leadership role he has been playing in the party,” Saraki said.
The delegation emphasized the critical role the South East continues to play within the party and acknowledged Governor Mbah’s efforts both in governance and internal party leadership.
Saraki added that the session yielded valuable insights and laid the groundwork for further reconciliation steps. He expressed optimism about achieving peace and cohesion within the PDP through continued engagement with regional leaders.
