Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Adiele Opara, has been suspended by the Executive Ward 10 in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The suspension was announced in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Ward, Chisa Amadi, on Monday.
According to the statement, Opara was suspended for engaging in anti-party activities that are in violation of the party’s constitution and norms during the just-concluded 2023 elections.
The former Deputy Speaker was suspended alongside Ikechi Chinda, former PDP Local Government Area party Chairman in Port Harcourt, Daniel Chinda, PDP Secretary in Ward 10, and Richard James, PDP Ward 10 Publicity Secretary.
The statement further noted that the suspended members failed to pay their annual subscription fees, as stipulated by section 8 subsection 9 of the PDP constitution 2017, as amended.
The vote of no confidence passed on them during an emergency meeting of the party leadership led to their suspension.
The party warned the suspended members that they will not be allowed to enter the premises of the party office unless contacted.
The suspension may be linked to the crisis in Rivers PDP and the dichotomy between supporters of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and Governor Nyesom Wike.
The announcement of the suspension has generated mixed reactions from party members and political analysts in the state.
Some see it as a necessary step to instill discipline in the party and discourage anti-party activities, while others view it as a sign of deepening divisions within the party.
