Gary Lineker Speaks Out Against Government Selection of BBC Chairman

Gary Lineker has criticized the government’s involvement in the selection of the BBC chairman, following the resignation of Richard Sharp.

Sharp was found to have breached public appointment rules by failing to declare a connection to an £800,000 loan for former prime minister Boris Johnson.

Lineker stated that the BBC chairman should not be selected by the government of the day, and this is not the first time he has spoken out against the broadcaster’s relationship with the government.

In March, Lineker was asked to step back from presenting duties over his social media comments criticizing the government’s asylum policy.

This led to a debate about impartiality and caused the BBC to eventually let him back on the air.

Sharp intends to step down in June, and the government will select a new BBC chair on a four-year term.
