Kenneth Omeruo is not an unknown name in football having enjoyed a significant rise to fame locally and globally.

Currently 28, Omeruo was born on October 17, 1993, in Abia State Nigeria.

Life as a footballer for the Super Eagles defender started on a decent note to say the least; as he didn’t have to toil in Nigeria for long before exiting the country for greener pastures to advance as a footballer.

He had trials at Sunshine Stars in Nigeria and Anderlecht in Belgium. But he didn’t have a professional contract until 2010.

He signed for Standard Liège, and played at the club for two years before getting snapped up by Chelsea in 2012 and immediately loaned to Dutch side ADO Den Haag.

Omeruo was a Chelsea player for many years but he spent most of it as a loanee to other clubs. All his life at Chelsea, Omeruo played for six different clubs as a loanee.

He was finally sold to Leganes in 2019 – one of the clubs he has had loan spells, revealing that he’s been enjoying life at the club despite playing in the second-tier league.

International Career

For Nigeria, Omeruo started as a U17 squad member when the country hosted the 2009 edition of the tournament.

Omeruo’s Golden Eaglets side, tutored by John Obuh finished as the tournament’s runners-up after Switzerland following a 1-nil loss.

He featured for Nigeria’s senior team for the first time in 2013 and subsequently got called up for the AFCON 2013 in South Africa as Nigeria went ahead to win her third continental title.

Omeruo was named in Nigeria’s FIFA Confederations Cup squad,  featuring in all three matches the country played in Brazil in 2013 prior to the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

He’s still a Super Eagles defender to date with 57 caps and still counting.

Kenneth joined a host of other Nigerian ex-internationals to own a football academy to help boy children achieve their dream of becoming professional footballers.

This, according to Omeruo, is his way of giving back to society, noting that the government cannot do everything alone.

Aside from his academy, Omeruo is a major shareholder with a club in the Portuguese fourth-tier league, using his position to help young aspiring Nigerian professional footballers travel to Europe to broaden their football skills.

Kenneth tied the knot with his long-term partner Chioma Nnamani in 2017 in Istanbul, Turkey. The two of them have gotten two kids to show after five years as a couple.
