Egypt hosted the 32nd edition of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations from 21 June to 19 July, which was sponsored by Total.

This was the first AFCON that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) expanded from 16 to 24 teams.

Though Cameroon was supposed to have hosted the competition, but because of the delays in the delivery of infrastructure, the Boko Haram insurgency and the Anglophone Crisis, Egypt was chosen.

Another adjustment that was done to the tournament was moving the original dates of 15 June – 13 July to 21 June – 19 July because of Ramadan.

Algeria beat Senegal 1–0 in the final to win their second title and first since 1990.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles came third after defeating Tunisia 1–0 in the third-place play-off match.

The host nation (Egypt) were stopped in the round of 16 after losing 0–1 to South Africa.

Meanwhile, the original host (Cameroon), who were the defending champions, were also knocked out in the round of 16 by Gernot Rohr-led Super Eagles of Nigeria.
