Seun Kuti, a popular Afrobeats singer and son of the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, made headlines over the weekend after a video surfaced of him assaulting a police officer.
The officer involved in the altercation allegedly fell into a coma after writing his report on the incident.
The Nigeria Police Force, Lagos Command, has since issued an order for Seun’s arrest, and he was arraigned before a magistrate’s court in Yaba, Lagos State on Tuesday.
Prosecutors are asking for an ex parte order to detain Seun for 21 days to obtain his statement.
However, some, including African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, claim that there is an institutional and historical grudge against the Kutis and that prosecutors are seeking revenge rather than justice.
He said via his Twitter page also on Tuesday that the prosecutor also claimed the officer involved in the altercation is now in a “coma” after he left Seun’s house and finished writing his report.
“There is institutional and historical grudge to be settled with the Kutis. They are not seeking justice just want to exact revenge,” Sowore claimed.
The Yaba Magistrates Court judge has ordered Seun’s remand at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti Lagos, for 48 hours.
