In her new memoir, “Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me,” Whoopi Goldberg opens up about her past struggles with substance abuse. The 68-year-old actress reveals that she was once a “high-functioning addict” during the 1980s, regularly using drugs like cocaine.
Goldberg recounts a horrifying incident in which a hotel maid found her in a Manhattan hotel room with cocaine “all over” her face. She describes how she had been sitting on the closet floor sniffing cocaine when the maid knocked on the door and let herself in. Goldberg admits to feeling embarrassed and ashamed, realizing the extent to which the drug had control over her.
The “Sister Act” star attributes her addiction to the drug-fueled Hollywood parties she attended in the 1980s. She recalls how these parties, held in prestigious locations like Hollywood, Bel Air, and Beverly Hills, would have bowls of quaaludes at the door and lines of cocaine laid out for guests.
Despite her addiction, Goldberg managed to maintain her career and show up to work. However, she admits that after about a year, she began to feel “sloppy” on set and realized she needed to make a change.
In addition to her own struggles, Goldberg also shares the story of her mother, Emma, who was sent to a psychiatric hospital for two years when Goldberg was just eight years old. Goldberg vividly recalls the day she found her mother in a disheveled state, attempting to harm herself.
