Nigeria Air will likely commence flight operations in the next few weeks, after being granted its Air Operators Certificate (AOC) by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
The airline was formed in July 2018 and is a joint venture between the Nigerian government, which holds 5% of the shares, private Nigerian investors with 46%, and Ethiopia Airlines, which holds 49%.
It has been reported that Nigeria Air will start flying as early as May 29th, 2023 – when President Muhammadu Buhari leaves office – though this has caused a stir among other airlines in Nigeria, who believe it to be an unfair advantage due to the Ethiopian Airlines large share of ownership.
The court is due to hear this on February 13th; at a similar time, Nigeria Air expects its AOC.
Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika is confident this will happen soon: “Nigeria Air will launch shortly…it will be launched within this quarter”.
