The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide is currently working to secure the release of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and his wife from a UK prison.

The couple was arrested by the UK metro police for their involvement in organ trafficking.

They were accused of unlawfully transporting an organ donor from Nigeria to the UK for a kidney transplant for their daughter, Sonia Ekweremadu.

As a result, Senator Ekweremadu was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in jail, while his wife Beatrice received a sentence of six years.

In an effort to seek leniency, the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo met with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, to discuss the case.

Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma appealed for a pardon for Ekweremadu and his wife, citing the circumstances that led to their offense.

“There is a very important issue that we have to bring to your attention. You’re aware of the case of Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu who was convicted and is in jail in your country.

“He’s from this state and we all know the circumstance he got entangled in that unfortunate incident because he wanted to save his daughter.”

The British high commissioner expressed his support for peace in the country and discussed possible collaboration between the UK government and the southeast region of Nigeria.
