Meta has filed a lawsuit against Joy Timeline, a Hong Kong-based company accused of promoting AI nudify apps across Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads. The legal action follows a CBS News investigation that uncovered hundreds of ads for these apps targeting users without consent.
According to CBS News, many of the nudify app ads specifically aimed at men in the US, UK, and European Union, often promoting the ability to digitally undress women and female celebrities. These exploitative tools have contributed to growing concerns about blackmail and “sextortion” incidents, with some of these harmful apps reportedly reaching children.
Meta’s lawsuit seeks to stop Joy Timeline from advertising its CrushAI apps after the company allegedly tried to bypass Meta’s ad review process multiple times. “This legal action underscores both the seriousness with which we take this abuse and our commitment to doing all we can to protect our community from it,” Meta stated.
Reports from 404 Media in April 2024 and action by San Francisco against deepfake sites in August 2024 reflect increasing efforts to combat the spread of nonconsensual AI deepfake content.
