I know, most of you are hearing this for the first time and there is a chance you rushed or are only here because you actually needs one of them (most probably for your branch).

The thing is, sort codes aren’t used or let me say needed by customers in most day to day financial transactions we carried out. Yes, banks official makes use of it but customers won’t be asked to fill in this codes in most cases.

So what are they and why do you need to know about it? Good question, continue reading and you will find out.

UBA Sort Code Explained

Sort Codes are used by banks to represent and differentiate one of their branches from the other. Meaning each of UBA Bank about 600+ branches in Nigeria has a unique set of numbers representing them known as sort codes.

This code is 9 digit and it is splitted into 3 different parts as explained below.

• First Part which contains the first 3 digits represents the bank. Often referred to as the bank’s code. It is 033 for United Bank for Africa (UBA) in Nigeria
• Second part which is the fourth digit represent the branch’s location (mostly region) i.e where the account is being held
• Third and last part of the code is the last five digit and this represents a particular branch of the financial institution in the country.

In summary, when you are asked to enter or fill in the sort code of your uba branch, they want to know where your account is being held (country, state, region with the help of the first 4 digits of the code) and which particular branch (with the help of the last 5 digit).

Branches in the same states or locality might have up to 7 or even 8 on rare occasion the same.
